The Long-Tailed Macaque Project

We work with people and macaques across discplines and countries to further coexistence and share knowledge. Our activities include conducting and facilitating research to build local capacity and conserve local ecosystems respecting both human and animal agency

Native to Southeast Asia, the long-tailed macaque is a flexible and adaptable species particularly threatened by trade. As an international collaborative charity, we work towards capacity building to promote its survival and preserve its ecological and cultural roles.

Following the IUCN Red List 2022 Assessment, the synanthropic and ecological contributions of the long-tailed macaque and its subspecies make their management and protection key for human, animal, and environmental health.

A Species in Peril

“We need new lenses to understand the synanthropic long-tailed macaque […] especially at a time where they are being culled and harvested at high rates and experiencing diverse threats.
In our efforts to conserve the smallest populations of the least adaptable species, we unintendedly portray adaptable species as unimportant, as least concern, which affects human perceptions of these species.”
Prof. Augustin Fuentes & Dr. Malene Friis Hansen

“If the world of nonhuman primates offers an emblem of the tensions of modernity, it’s Macaca fascicularis, the long-tailed macaque.
This alert, adaptable Asian species is one of the world’s most familiar monkeys, but also among the most sorely taken for granted, its population status is poorly known but seem to combine the good news of broad distribution with the bad news of declining numbers.”
David Quammen
